Here's how it works.  Individual solar photovoltaic panels, called PV modules, are connected together to form a system called an array.  Small semiconductor cells integrated in the modules collect the sunlight.  They transform the sunlight into direct current or DC electricity.  This energy flows from the system array into an inverter which converts it into alternating current or AC electricity.  This is commonly called household current.  Through as series of electrical equipment, the electricity generated by the system is used instead of that from the public utility.  If there's any excess generated it can be sold back to the utility company through a Net Metering agreement.
